Families and the 4Family
Is there a motorhome designed for families?
Most motorhomes adapt couple layouts for families. The HIP 4Family was designed from the start with children, storage, safety and daily family routines in mind. It has two lounges, two drop-down beds, a kitchen on the awning side, a large bathroom and garage storage, in a 7.2 m vehicle. See how it compares with other family motorhomes.
How rare are two separate seating areas?
Rare. In HIP Campers’ 2025 survey of 494 European motorhome models from 14 manufacturers, 2 models (0.4%) had two seating areas. In 89% of models the seating is at the front. Read the full survey.
Where is the kitchen in most motorhomes?
Mostly on the left, driver side. In the same survey, about three quarters of models (75.7%) had a left-side kitchen and 24% had a right-side kitchen, which is the awning side. The 4Family has its kitchen on the awning side, so the cook can see the awning and the children outside.
Why does payload matter for families?
A family of four with a full water tank, an awning and gear can use up a 3.5 t weight limit quickly. In the same survey, 339 of 494 models (69%) were rated at 3.5 t gross weight. The HIP 4Family is rated at 4.2 t.
Does the 4Family work in cold weather?
Yes, it is designed for use all year. It has a double heated floor, 33 mm wall insulation and powerful LPG heater with boiler (diesel heating is optional).
Does the 4Family have a bathroom the whole family can use?
Yes. The bathroom is between the two sleeping areas and can be reached from either end, so no one needs to wake the others at night. The ceiling height is 2.03 m. The sink folds away to make a shower space of 120 x 85 cm. A cassette toilet is standard, and a waterless toilet is optional. A 230 V socket is also available. Storage cabinets are available for the whole family’s toiletries.
How much storage does the 4Family have?
Two garages hold 2,780 litres combined, comparable to motorhomes up to a meter longer. Garage hatches can also be locked separately from the cabin.
Can parents work remotely from the 4Family?
Yes. The rear lounge can be a quiet workspace while the children use the front lounge.
Motorhome types
What is the difference between a motorhome and a campervan?
A campervan is a converted panel van, usually under 6 m, where the living space fits inside the original van body. A motorhome has a larger purpose-built living area, often with a separate bathroom, a full kitchen and fixed beds. Campervans are easier to park and drive. Motorhomes give more space, storage and comfort for longer trips.
What is the difference between fully integrated, semi-integrated and coachbuilt motorhomes?
A fully integrated motorhome has a body that includes the cab, so the driver and passenger seats are part of the living space. A semi-integrated motorhome keeps the original van cab and adds a living body behind it. A coachbuilt motorhome also keeps the original cab and often has a bed above it. Fully integrated models are usually the most spacious inside.
What is an A-class motorhome?
An A-class motorhome is a fully integrated motorhome with a single body that runs from the front windscreen to the rear, with no separate van cab. The term is common in the US. In Europe, „fully integrated“ is the usual name for the same design.
What is a motorhome layout?
A motorhome layout is the arrangement of the sleeping, living, kitchen, bathroom and storage areas inside the vehicle. Two vehicles of the same length can feel very different to live in because of it. The layout decides where you sleep, how easily you cook, how much you can store and how many people can travel comfortably.
Choosing a motorhome layout
Which motorhome layout is best for couples?
It depends on how a couple travels. Couples who tour for weeks usually prefer a permanent bed and good storage. Couples who take short trips and spend more time relaxing inside may prefer a large lounge that converts into a bed. Compact vehicles suit couples who value easy parking and maneuvering.
Which motorhome layout is best for families?
A good family layout gives every traveler a belted seat, a permanent sleeping place and room to relax on rainy days. Look for dedicated children’s beds that don’t use up the lounge, a second seating area, a bathroom the whole family can use and a large storage space for strollers, bikes and gear.
What are the main types of motorhome beds?
The common types are a fixed island bed, fixed single beds, a French bed, a transverse double bed, bunk beds, an over-cab bed, a drop-down bed and a bed made by converting the lounge or dinette. Fixed beds stay made up. Drop-down and converting beds free up daytime space but need to be lowered or made up each evening.
Is a fixed bed better than a bed that converts from a lounge?
A fixed bed stays made up, so you never convert anything in the evening. A converting bed frees up daytime space but needs making up and putting away every day. For short trips, converting is often fine. For long trips, most owners find a fixed bed or a drop-down bed more convenient.
What is a drop-down bed in a motorhome?
A drop-down bed is a bed that stays up against the ceiling during the day and lowers over the seating or cab at night. It leaves the floor and seats free for daytime use and means nobody has to convert the lounge before bed. Check the headroom when it is lowered and make sure it doesn’t block the door or the kitchen.
Which motorhome layout offers the most storage?
Layouts with a fixed bed above a rear garage usually offer the largest storage space. The garage can often hold two bikes or even a scooter, though it usually needs extra fixtures such as shelves, rails or straps to keep belongings organized. Some motorhomes have two garages, one at the rear and one in the center. Two garages keep gear separated and organized without extra fixtures. Always check the real dimensions of the garage and the payload, not only the volume in the brochure, because the payload, the weight you can legally load, decides how much you can actually carry.
What is the best motorhome layout for long trips?
For long trips, choose a layout with a permanent bed or drop-down beds, so nothing needs converting each evening. It should also have a practical kitchen, a comfortable bathroom and plenty of interior storage. Over several weeks, small daily tasks such as making the bed or moving gear to reach the kitchen add up. For that reason, convenience matters more than extra floor space.
What is the difference between a berth and a travel seat?
A berth is a sleeping place. A travel seat is a seat with a seatbelt for use while the vehicle is moving. A motorhome can have more berths than travel seats, so a four-berth vehicle may have only two belted seats. If more than two people travel regularly, always check both numbers before buying.
What should I check before choosing a motorhome layout?
Check the layout in every mode. Lower the beds, set up the table, open the cupboards and doors at the same time, and then check that nothing blocks the bathroom, the kitchen or the entrance. Lie on each bed, stand where you would cook and step into the shower. A layout that looks spacious on paper can feel tight in use.
Can I try a motorhome before I buy one?
Yes. Many buyers rent a similar motorhome for a weekend first, visit a dealer or a manufacturer’s showroom, or look at vehicles at motorhome shows. Spending a night in a similar layout shows you things a showroom visit doesn’t, such as how the bed, bathroom and storage work after a full day of use.
Size, weight and driving
What size motorhome do I need?
Choose the smallest motorhome that gives everyone a bed, a seat and some storage. Think about how many people travel regularly, how long your trips are and where you will park. Longer vehicles give more space, but they are harder to drive and park, and harder to fit onto campsites, ferries and narrow roads. A motorhome under 7 m is easy to handle. One between 7 and 7.4 m offers a good balance of space and maneuverability. Anything over 7.5 m needs extra attention and planning, especially for routes, parking and campsites.
What is the payload of a motorhome and why does it matter?
Payload is the weight you can add to the vehicle: people, water, fuel, gas, food, bikes and gear. It is the maximum authorized weight minus the weight of the empty, ready-to-drive vehicle. A low payload means you may exceed the legal limit with a full family and gear, so ask for the real payload of the exact version you plan to buy.
What driving license do I need for a motorhome?
It depends on the vehicle’s maximum authorized weight and the country. In the EU, a standard car license (category B) covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg. Heavier motorhomes usually need a category C1 license, which covers 3,500 to 7,500 kg. A new EU directive will raise the category B limit to 4,250 kg for motorhomes, but each country must first adopt it into national law, and some may require extra training or a test. Until then, the current rules apply. Rules also differ between countries and for licenses issued before certain dates, so check with your national licensing authority before you buy.
Using a motorhome
Can you use a motorhome in winter?
Yes, if it is designed for it. Look for good insulation, a heating system that works in freezing weather, water tanks and pipes protected from frost, and double-glazed windows. Some motorhomes are built for year-round use and others only for the warm season. As a rule of thumb, wall insulation of at least 30 mm is a common minimum for winter use, although thickness alone does not guarantee performance. For example, the HIP 4Family has 33 mm wall insulation, which is suitable for winter camping. Ask the manufacturer what temperature the vehicle has been tested for.
What is off-grid power in a motorhome?
Off-grid power means the motorhome can run its lights, fridge, water pump and electronics without a campsite hookup. It usually relies on a large leisure battery, solar panels and a charger that works from the engine. The key points to compare are battery capacity, solar output and how long the system lasts between charges.
